Take Our Kids To Work Day 2025 - Wednesday, November 5, 2025

TOKTWD

Dear Grade 9 Students and Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce our participation in Take Our Kids to Work Day (TOKTWD), a national, one-day job shadow event held annually since 1994.

This valuable experience encourages Grade 9 students to spend a day observing a working adult—a parent, guardian, relative, adult friend, or volunteer host—to gain insight into the world of work.

1. Key Responsibilities (Please Read Carefully)

It is crucial to understand the parameters of this day:

  • Placement and Supervision: This is NOT an Eric Hamber school field trip. School staff will not be involved in organizing, supervising, or attending any of the workplaces.
  • Parental Responsibility: Parents/Guardians are responsible for all aspects of their child's work placement, including arranging a safe and meaningful work shadow experience, transportation, and safety throughout the day.
  • Encouraging Exploration: We encourage you to provide a meaningful placement for your child or help them explore possible networks to secure a job shadow experience. Many post-secondary institutions also host related events on this day.

2. Required Paperwork and Deadlines

Students will receive the required Introduction Letter, Consent Form, and Reflection Activity through the Grade 9 TEAM.

Note on Attendance: Returning the consent form is essential so that the school can plan for the day and ensure your child’s absence is marked as excused.

3. The Educational Component

The reflection activity on this experience is a mandatory requirement for the completion of Career Education 9. The assignment is posted on the Grade 9 resources page and can be completed whether a student visits a job site or not on TOKTWD.

Flexibility: While we encourage the November 5th date, we understand that it may not work for all families or host workplaces. If needed, parents can arrange for an alternate day. Please contact the school in advance to ensure the student's absence is marked as excused on the original date.

4. Objectives of Take Our Kids to Work Day

This day is designed to achieve the following:

  • Career View: To offer students a realistic view of the world of work and to foster an understanding of its demands and opportunities.
  • Adult Roles: To allow students to see their parents/guardians or other volunteer hosts in different professional roles.
  • Community Learning: To emphasize that education extends beyond the classroom walls and that preparing the next generation is a community responsibility.

5. Community Resources and Opportunities (Vancouver Area)

Beyond shadowing a family member, many community organizations and post-secondary institutions offer specialized events for TOKTWD. Here are a sample of resources and opportunities you can explore in the Greater Vancouver area:

Simon Fraser University (SFU): SFU typically hosts a dedicated program on their Burnaby campus including presentations, campus tours, and hands-on sessions in various faculties (e.g., Computer Science, Environment). Look for event details on their "SFU Annual Take Our Kids to Work Day" page.

Resource:

Vancouver Police Department (VPD): The VPD offers a full day of presentations and activities involving various sections of the organization for Grade 9 children of VPD employees. Waitlists may be available for others.

Resource:

City of Surrey: The City of Surrey frequently organizes multiple events and activities related to TOKTWD for their community.

Resource:

Student Commission Canada (National Resources): Check this site for registration, national virtual content, and general resources, which are great options if an in-person placement is not possible.
